practicallyblack asked: I love your blog! I have been natural for the past 18 years, which i s my whole life, and I have only straitened my hair three times ever in memory. All of these problems have always bugged me especially the one about the conditioner and if you're not white, and you wear your hair natural, you must be mixed(not). But anyway, I noticed recently that my hair has been shedding, and it's not as strong as it used to be, maybe caused by stress. Can you recommend any strengthening hair products?

thanks for the kind words!

in my opinion, the best way to strengthen your hair is by keeping it well fed and moisturized, and here are some tips on doing that.

as far as shedding, it’s important to remember that that’s what hair is SUPPOSED to do.  we lose hair every day, and the normal amount we lose varies from person to person.  when i detangle, i’m AMAZED that there’s ever any hair left on my head after seeing what my denman looks like, lol.  but i don’t panic.  that’s just how my hair is.

but, if you feel like you’re losing too much, or more than usual, maybe look into protein.  note:  not everyone’s hair likes protein!!  protein treatments help LOTS of folk, but for some, it makes their situations worse—i’m one of those people.  protein freaks my hair all the way out.  makes it dry, increases shedding and breakage, etc.  so i stay away from it.  but everyone is different.. check out these posts on protein and natural hair, and proceed at will:

i encourage you to do some additional research as well; these are just a few quick links.  and here are a few tips on things you can do to naturally strengthen your hair, from items you can use to foods you can eat.

good luck!
